  12.  StartWrite is included as part of the Acorn Action Pack which is sold with
  13. a 1MB A3010 computer. This document will explain how to get the best from
  14. StartWrite in this configuration.

  16. Y ou will be shown how to create your own 'working disc' of StartWrite which
  17. will also contain a suitable printer driver.

  46. Before you start

  48.  This application note assumes that you have read, and understood, the
  49. Welcome Guide supplied with your computer. If you haven't, you should read
  50. the guide first in order to learn how to use the mouse and find your way
  51. around the RISC OS desktop.

  53.  You will also see specific page references to the User/Application Guide
  54. where additional information is available, for example  (User Guide - p34) 
  55. -  means refer to page 34 of the RISC OS 3 User Guide.

  57. Introduction
  58.  
  59.  This application note will assist the user in optimising the use of
  60. StartWrite when used on an A3010 fitted with 1MB of RAM. You will be shown
  61. how to create your own 'working copy' of the StartWrite disc, onto which you
  62. will install :
  63.  
  64. !Fonts 
  65. !Scrap 
  66. !System 
  67. !StartWrite 
  68. !Printers
  69.  
  70.  
  71. In order to do this, you will need the following :
  72.  
  73. * Your original StartWrite application disc 
  74. * A blank High Density (HD) floppy disc 
  75. * Acorn RISC OS 3 Applications Disc
  76.

  78. Creating a StartWrite 'working' disc
  79.  
  80. Creating the blank working disc :
  81.  
  82. 1)Format a blank High Density (HD) disc to Acorn 1.6MB 'F' Format   (User
  83. Guide - p34) 
  84. 2)Name the disc 'StartWork'  (Welcome Guide - p31) 
  85. 3)Dismount the 'StartWork' disc by choosing Dismount from the floppy disc
  86. drive icon  menu and remove the disc from the drive. (User Guide - p33)
  87.  
  88. Copy !Fonts, !Scrap, !System and !Printers to your 'StartWork' disc :
  89.  
  90. 4) Create a RAM disc from the task manager window (User Guide - p46) 
  91. 5) Insert your RISC OS 3 Applications disc into the floppy disc drive 
  92. 6) Copy !Fonts, !Scrap and !System into the RAM disc   (Welcome Guide - p47)
  93. 7) Copy !Printers from the 'App1' directory on the RAM disc  
  94. 8) Copy a suitable printer driver from the 'Printers' directory (within the
  95. 'App2' directory)  onto the RAM disc  
  96. 9) Dismount the RISC OS 3 Applications disc and remove it from the disc
  97. drive 
  98. 10) Insert your 'StartWork' disc into the floppy disc drive and copy the
  99. contents of the RAM  disc to the 'StartWork' disc 
  100. 12) Dismount the 'StartWork' disc and remove it from the disc drive
  101.  
  102. 13) Delete the contents of the RAM disc    (Welcome Guide - p48)   
  103. 14) Insert the original StartWrite disc into the floppy disc drive and copy
  104. the !StartWrite  application into the RAM disc  
  105. 16) Dismount the StartWrite disc and remove it from the disc drive
  106. 17) Insert your 'StartWork' disc into the drive and copy the !StrtWrite
  107. application from the  RAM disc to the 'StartWork' disc 
  108. 18) Reset the computer by holding down the Ctrl key while you press the
  109. Reset button   (Welcome Guide - p82)

  112. Setting up the 'StartWork' disc :
  113.  
  114. Make sure you have thoroughly read and understood the section on printing in
  115. Section 4 of the  RISC OS 3 User Guide starting on Page 59 before proceeding
  116. :

  118. 19) With the 'StartWork' disc in the drive, run the !Printers application
  119. and when the printer  application appears on the icon bar, choose Printer
  120. Control from the printer menu 
  121. 20) Drag your chosen printer driver onto the Printer Control window.
  122. 21) Make any further changes to the printer driver if necessary. 
  123. 22) Choose the Save Choices option from the printer menu 
  124. 23) Delete the printer driver from the 'StartWork' disc
  125.  
  126. Your StartWrite working disc will now have the following structure:

  130.  Quit the !Printers application  by choosing the 'Quit' option from the
  131. printer icon menu.
  132.  
  133. Install/Authorise the original/master StartWrite disc
  134.  
  135.  Next, you need to install your working copy of !StrtWrite disc as per the
  136. installation leaflet supplied with StartWrite.  This is performed by running
  137. the !StrtWrite application and then typing in your name in order to
  138. register/personalise your copy of StartWrite. After you have done this,
  139. write protect the disc by moving the tab on the floppy disc to the Write
  140. Protect position.

  144. Using the startup disc
  145.  
  146. With a printer
  147.  
  148. If you wish to use a printer then:
  149.  
  150. 1) Turn your computer and printer on, insert the StartWork disc and click on
  151. the floppy disc  drive icon 
  152. 2) Double-click on the !Printers icon 
  153. 3) When !Printers has loaded, quit the !Printers application by choosing the
  154. 'Quit' option  from the printer icon menu 
  155. 4) Double-click on the !StrtWrite application icon

  157. Without a printer
  158.  
  159. If you do not wish to use a printer then:
  160.  
  161. 1) Turn your computer and printer on, insert the StartWork disc and click on
  162. the floppy disc  drive icon 
  163. 2) Double-click on the !StrtWrite application icon
  164.

  166. Finally....
  167.  
  168.  Users of RISC OS version 3.10 should ensure that the user configuration
  169. setting for ADFSBUFFERS is set to zero. To see which version of RISC OS your
  170. computer has, press the Function key <F12> from the destkop and at the *
  171. prompt, type:
  172.  
  173. FX0 <RETURN>
  174.  
  175. If the response is:
  176.  
  177. RISC OS 3.10 (30 Apr 1992)
  178.  
  179. then you have RISC OS version 3.10. In this case, again from the command line, type:
  180.  
  181. CONFIGURE ADFSBUFFERS 0 <RETURN>
  182.  
  183. Press <RETURN> again to return you back to the desktop.

  186. Hints & Tips
  187.  
  188. * In order that you can still use the full functionality of StartWrite, it
  189. is recommended that  you keep documents fairly short (up to around four
  190. pages), and use several small files for  larger documents.
  191.  
  192. * While you have more memory available if you are not going to use a
  193. printer, it is still  recommended that you keep documents fairly short so
  194. that you may still edit them if you  wish to print them at a later date.

  197. For Advanced Users with Dot Matrix printers
  198.  
  199.  IMPORTANT: Do NOT make the following modification unless you fully understand the section
  200.  on printing in Section 4 of the RISC OS 3 User Guide. If you choose to 
  201. make the modification, ONLY modify the copy of !Printers on your working
  202. discs,  NOT the copy on the RISC OS Applications Disc.
  203.  
  204.   Advanced users who wish to use StartWrite in conjunction with a dot matrix
  205. printer only, may perform the following operation, which gives the dual
  206. benefit of reducing the disc space occupied by the copy of !Printers on the
  207. working disc, and also freeing a further 16K of memory in the machine for
  208. documents.
  209.  
  210. 1) Open the !Printers application directory on the working disc by holding
  211. down Shift while double clicking with Select on the !Printers icon.
  212.  
  213. 2) Delete the following directories:
  214.  
  215. lj 
  216. ps 
  217. PDumpers
  218.  
  219.   This produces a cut-down version of !Printers which still provides full
  220. support for dot matrix printers, but does not cater for inkjet, bubblejet or
  221. laser printers.
